According to the Cancer Council of Victoria, in their studies of the Victorian 2005 statistics (Victorian Cancer Registry 2008 - Cancer Council Victoria): - at least one in three Victorians will develop a cancer (other than non-melanotic skin cancer) by the time they are 75,
- cancer is the leading cause of death in Victoria accounting for 9,784 deaths (30% of the total),
- cancer is strongly related to age - 58% of tumours occur in people aged over 65 and less than 1% in those aged under 15,
- more men than women develop cancer - 123 men for each 100 women, largely due to more tobacco-related cancers in men,
- cancers of the prostate (16%), bowel (14%), breast (13%) and melanoma (8%) are the most common new cancers,
- cancers of the lung (18%), bowel (12%), prostate (8%) and breast (7%) are the leading causes of cancer death,
- breast cancer is the leading cancer in women (28%) as well as the major cause of death,
- prostate cancer is the leading cancer in men (30%), however, lung cancer is the major cause of death, and
- figures suggest that 61% of patients diagnosed in 2004 could still be alive in 2009.
